Why you need a workflow?

If you are running a WordPress agency you will realise that you need to have a workflow.

I struggled when when I initially started and simply learned some useful tips by doing.

When you don’t have a workflow, you spent tonnes of hours researching and finding this and that when a project is about to kick-start. This is time consuming and costs you, alot.

These are things to consider:

Be knowledgeable about what you want to offer as service. For example, if you want to run a WordPress agency make sure you have good and extensive knowledge about the CMS ecosystem. You need to validate your knowledge by building real world and production ready websites.

Have a Computer or laptop. A laptop is good because of its portability. For someone working out in coffee bars this can be handy. If you opt for a PC then make sure to have a space that is conducive to work. Specs for your machines needs to be 8GB RAM, lots of storage preferably SSD and 2 monitors with crisp graphics, any medium ranged CPU such as i5/ i7

Software stack installed on your machine. Personally, I used Local for WordPress development and I loved it. I previously used the following MAMP, WAMP,LAMP and LEMP. All are great tools except that I find Local to really simplify things way better

Apart from your stack you need to have Git and Text Editors installed. Good and free ones are VS Code, Atom, Notepad++

Free and Premium themes and plugins. One of the greatest mistake done by new Devs in the WordPress space is that they get overwhelmed by the vast pool of themes and plugins available on places like Themeforest. They end up pay for over complicated themes with higher ratings that are full of bloats and underperform

  • Pick a premium theme preferably Gutenberg support and part of Framework
  • Pick plugins that ONLY needed for client usecase
  • Track your work eg. Trello
  • Communication tool with client eg. Slack
  • Use prototype tool for mockups
  • Use Local for staging websites
  • I sometimes build a stack to resemble client setup during development

If you feel that you need to have a workflow that can suit your agency I can help. Otherwise, do leave a comment on what needs to be added. Would be good to see your workflow as well.
